Product Info: Parents interested in buying an easy-to-use drone made for first flights will find a lot to like in Spin Master’s DR1 Micro Race Drone. In fact, the indoor drone makes learning how to fly quadcopters easy thanks to automatic take-off and landing, as well as steady hovering.
In the package, you’ll find the drone itself, a controller, a USB charger, instructions that help you understand different buttons and switches, a spare pack of propellers – in case you damage the ones already installed – and a tool to install them.
Getting started is easy. An adult needs to unscrew the remote’s back panel to add three AAA batteries, not included. Then charge the drone, and you’re ready for flight. Just hit the take-off button and you’ll automatically take to the air. If your drone is drifting, several buttons on the remote can help steady it with anti-rotation, forward, backward, left and right adjustments.
Flight time is about 5 – 7 minutes on a full charge, and the short flight time is offset by a pretty quick charge time of 30 minutes. All you have to do is plug the drone into any USB port, making it easy to recharge at home or on the go.
Once in the air, the DR1 is easy to control, making it relatively maneuverable through household obstacles like chairs, counters and pets. And, since it has a very soft plastic body, there’s no damage when you inevitably crash into something.
For added fun, there’s also a button that lets you perform tricks. And, once you master flight, you can flip a switch to switch from easy to hard mode. To be honest though, the difference isn’t noticeable.
Also, while this drone is really intended for indoor use only, that’s really more of a guideline. It can fly very well outside in low-wind.
One thing to note, while it is listed as a racing drone, only one comes in the package. You can buy multiple, and thanks to a four channel R/C, you and your friends can fly and race up to four different drones at the same time.
With a decent flight time, easy to use controller and the ability to do tricks and a minimal $40 MSRP, you can’t really beat this beginner drone.
