In Iain M. Banks’ novel “Excession”, drone Sisela Ytheleus 1/2 – a type D4 military drone and one half of a twinned pair – are the focus of an assault by an unknown attacking entity tearing their Elencher homeship apart. The battle is heated and intense: the attacker creates electrical explosions, uses empty spacesuits, and smoke to distract the Drone, force it to change course at the speed of sound, and to try to slow it down. It’s a plucky little fellow, one small character in a book full of interesting characters, places, and a fantastic plot of conspiracy and, dare it be said, intrigue.
This video is an homage to Sisela, and to Banks: the interior of the Elencher craft ‘Peace Makes Plenty’, scarred, battle worn; broken. The Cube represents the alien entity, appearing without notice, scanning its surroundings quickly, collating topographical diagrams of the ship interior before displacing itself to a new location, hunting down those last stragglers fighting to resist its heavy onslaught.
