“On August 11, the air defense units atÂ the Hmeymim airbase detected an unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV] launched fromÂ the territory controlled byÂ illegal armed groups inÂ the Idlib de-escalation zone,” Tsygankov said atÂ a daily briefing.
The aerial target was destroyed atÂ a safe distance fromÂ the base, the official added.
According toÂ the general, the incident incurred no casualties or material damage, while the operations atÂ the base were not interrupted.
Russian military had been deployed inÂ Syria inÂ 2015 atÂ the invitation ofÂ the Syrian government, which asked forÂ Moscow’s assistance inÂ the fight againstÂ terrorism.
Russian military has been downing drones launched atÂ the Hmeymim airbase forÂ some time now. Previous month, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Russian Air Force destroyed a UAV, launched fromÂ the territory underÂ the control ofÂ illegal armed formations inÂ the north ofÂ the province ofÂ Latakia.
Several similar incidents occurred also inÂ June, asÂ well asÂ in May and April, when drones ofÂ unknown origin were detected and destroyed byÂ Russian air defenses.
