U.S. Military Building $100M Drone Base in Niger

The US

military has broken ground on a massive $100-million drone base in Africa According to previously classified documents obtained by the Intercept through a Freedom of Information Act request, the US is building a new drone base in Niger According to the documents, the base will feature a 1,830-meter runway to support cargo aircraft as well as the MQ-1 Predator and its newer, deadlier cousin, the MQ-9 Reaper

As for why Niger was chosen as the location of this new US drone base? The Reaper has a range of roughly 1,200 miles, meaning the unmanned aircraft is within range to strike within Nigeria, Mali, Libya and Tunisia — countries struggling with Isis-affiliated militants and government instability In addition, the documents say that Niger is one of the only countries which allows remotely piloted aircraft operations For NewsBeat Social, from Washington, D
